The MCRC continued a strong return to competition on Saturday, marching into a sea of blue turf and dominating the University of New Haven Chargers with a final score of 62-7. With the win, Middlebury improves to 2-0 and looks to move closer to postseason play with a win this coming Saturday, October 9th.
Pack weight counted for very little as the MCRC scrum more than held its own against a far heftier New Haven pack. In the back line, Middlebury’s speed with the ball and quick hands to move play to the outside proved to be too much for the Chargers. Play opened with several minutes of back and forth play in the trenches before fly-half Alex Milligan ‘25 broke through the New Haven line and outpaced all defenders for the first try of the day. A second line break by inside center Will Ebby ‘22 and a conversion by outside center Red Douoguih ‘23 put the MCRC up 12-0. Milligan quickly followed that up with his second score, converted again by Douoguih. To close out the half, fullback Sam Madden ‘22 got in on the action for his first try of many on the day for a score of 24-0 at the end of the first 40 minutes.
The second half got off to poor start, with a cheeky interception by the New Haven winger leading to the Chargers’ lone points of the match. The MCRC responded with three beautiful consecutive tries from Madden, questionable dance moves notwithstanding. Not satisfied, the MCRC added on, as Milligan completed his hat trick before scrum-half Griffin Shapiro ‘22 picked a ball from a lost New Haven scrum and ran it in. Winger Yuta Kato ‘22 rounded out the scoring with a try of his own for the final score of 62-7.
A huge thank you to the alums who came out to cheer on the boys, and to Mr. Ebby for the photography! Middlebury eyes a return home over fall family weekend with a chance to extend the win streak against Eastern Connecticut. We also plan for our first B-side match of the season to follow, with the Killer B’s hungry for their first real game action. Be sure to follow the MCRC instagram and twitter (both @themcrc) for real-time updates on the club!
