A very rewarding fall 2015 season has come to an end for the MCRC. Playing in an expanded, nine team East Coast Rugby Conference, the boys in blue finished 3 – 5, recording wins against UConn, UAlbany, and Fairfield University. AIC continued their conference dominance going 8 – 0, outscoring their opponents by 519 points.
Though the season involved three tough losses, the younger members of the club gained a wealth of knowledge as injuries took a toll and starting spots opened. Only four players (Tucker Hopkins ’16, Adam Markun ’17, Jackson Bock ’18, and Ben Manoukian ’18.5) started all eight games. Filling the other jerseys were 25 different players, seven of which included freshman. These younger players will now take their A-side experience into the spring season where some will transition to 7s rugby while others will continue to hone their 15s skills.
Eight seniors with A-side caps (Cole Baker, Chad Kahn, Ted Benge, Tucker Hopkins, Griffin Jones, Sam Schwarz, Sander Mora, and Winston Surrey) will be graduating this year.
The club was led by temporary head coach Peter Sickle, who served as assistant in the spring of 2015. Coach Sickle focused on teaching a style of rugby that emphasized unity. Coach Sickle will be returning to his home in Tel Aviv, Israel at the end of the season and though his time with the club was short, his energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the organization was invaluable.
